Author: This station Release date: 2026-09-19

For a long time, the study abroad data reports we have seen come from the university application system, but if we start from the candidates who take the study abroad English standard test, what will we see?

The just released 《IELTS Voices 2026", providing an interesting perspective, the survey covered 8,395 recent and future participants in 165 countries and regions.IELTSexaminee of the examination.

From which country they choose, to why they choose an exam, to where they plan to stay after graduation, this report gives three changes that are taking place in global study abroad.

The United States lost to Australia.

Study abroad no longer bet on a single country

In recent years, the policy direction of the world's major destination countries has changed dramatically, changing everyone's route choice.

Australia, for example, has significantly increased the application fee for student visas, while the UK has tightened visas and increased the number of students enrolled.Language thresholdCanada and the United States are also tightly controlling the size of international students.

In contrast to these mainstream study abroad countries, the new policy introduced by New Zealand has attracted many international students, and small European countries such as Germany have also re-entered the vision of study abroad families with their strength.

From IELTS Voices data covering 165 countries and regions and 8,395 respondents, the first trend we can see is that the era of single-point betting is over,Joint applications from multiple countriesIt has become the main strategy.

Of those interviewees,63% are studying abroad., 15% for permanent residence or immigration, 13% for work and 7%Occupational Registration2% for other reasons.

Judging from the destination intention of global examinees,Australia, Canada and the United KingdomThese are the three most popular destinations.

The candidates planning to go to Australia accounted for 18%, Canada accounted for 17%, the United Kingdom accounted for 16%, the United States accounted for 9%, Germany accounted for 6%, New Zealand accounted for 4%,However, 30% of the candidates chose "other countries", which is the highest proportion.

If you look at it from the perspective of different sources of origin, there are also differences in the choice of destinations chosen by candidates.

Among the candidates who plan to go to Canada, 30% are from India, 13% are from Nigeria and 7% are from Canada.

Candidates who plan to apply to American universities with IELTS scores are mainly from Uzbekistan, accounting for 9%, followed by Bangladesh with 8% andChina 6%。

Nigeria accounted for 9 per cent of the prospective applicants from the UK, India and China for 8 per cent, and India and Kenya for 9 per cent of the prospective applicants from Australia,China accounts for 8%。

Traditional study abroad countries are still the mainstream, but the global study abroad has become more scattered, and more and more candidates begin to pay attention to other countries and regions.

Among the respondents for the purpose of studying abroad,Forty-two percent made it clear that they would consider and apply to multiple different destinations at the same time.It can be seen that everyone does not want to stick to a single country, but wants to maximize their options at the application stage.

This trend of multi-country mixed application is directly reflected in the candidates' preference for language tests.

82% of the interviewees put "being recognized by the most extensive universities and related institutions" in the first place, because for students from multiple countries, it is most important that transcripts can be recognized by more universities.

They want to adjust their study destination, change schools or adjust their application routes, and they have more room to choose.

Another 11% give priority to "more safe and reliable, even if the cost is higher or takes longer", and 7% pay more attention to "quick distribution, even if there are fewer receiving institutions".

A New Algorithm for Educational Returns

Ideal results are more important than value for money

When it comes to the return of studying abroad, we often pay attention to the tuition fees of universities, but this is only the tip of the iceberg of the bill for studying abroad.

From language tests, application materials, to visas, background promotion, every link before the university application costs. For example, the language test is also a big investment in the long run.

However, the data of "IELTS Voices" has given us a new answer. It turns out that this is not because everyone ignores the examination fee, but when facing the key nodes of life, the pursuit of ideal results is more important than cost performance.

when candidates are faced with two examinations that are both accepted by the target institution,48% of the respondents believe that "examination fees are as important as achieving ideal goals";

Another 41% said that even if the examination cost is higher, they will choose the examination that they think has a greater chance of success. On the other hand, only 11% of people choose cheaper examinations even if they have no confidence.

In other words, nearly 90% of the interviewees believe that obtaining the desired results is more important than saving money, which is actually in line with the logic of studying abroad.

Although the language test for studying abroad is one of the thresholds for admission, it is not just a score.

For many international students, the results of spending money on exams, scores or English tutoring are almost visible to the naked eye.

Because the IELTS score of 5.5 and 7 is the difference between ordinary universities and prestigious universities, if you can get 8 points, then not only can you meet the language achievement threshold of all universities in the world, but there is no daily communication and academic learning in the process of living overseas. Big language barrier.

Moreover, candidates value not only scores, but also the benefits of improving language scores are comprehensive.

IELTS Voices data found that,65% of the interviewees gave a high rating of 7-10, believing that the test preparation process helped them improve the core competencies needed for future study, work or immigration.

Among them, the recognition of study abroad and work-related paths reached 68%. Career registration and immigration paths also reached 60% and 57% respectively.

In terms of specific capabilities, the feedback from 6,194 respondents was also interesting:

Sixty-seven percent said they had greatly improved their oral confidence and academic or workplace writing skills;

34% of people believe that their confidence in their daily use of English has increased;

30% improved their comprehension of classroom instructions and academic materials;

29% said their overall confidence in applying for international programs had increased;

Another 25% said the test preparation process helped them improve their time management skills.

These abilities do not seem to be directly related to a language report card, but they determine whether a student can adapt well when he goes overseas.

Therefore, when recalculating the return on studying abroad, parents can look longer.

If preparing for the exam enables children to master expression, reading, writing, comprehension and time management, then the return on this investment may have already occurred before receiving the admission letter.

Different Purposes of Studying Abroad in China and India

International students are being diverted.

Two trends reveal the general mindset of global candidates, and the third trend is the differentiation within international students.

The decision-making logic of international students around the world is different and there is no fixed template. Therefore, studying abroad is like a transit point in life, and candidates from different countries and destinations are taking different paths.

IELTS Voices also investigates how international students prepare for the next phase of their lives after completing their studies.

Looking at the global overseas students as a whole, 32% plan to stay at their destination for 3-5 years, 23% plan to stay for 1-2 years, 12% hope to stay permanently, 9% plan to stay for more than 5 years, and 13% have not yet been determined.

If we compare the two major countries of origin, China and India, the difference is even more obvious.

The willingness of Indian students to stay in the local area for a long time is even more prominent. 41% plan to stay for 3-5 years, 10% plan to stay for more than 5 years, and 12% hope to stay permanently. The proportion of those who plan to stay for only 1-2 years is 23%.

The plans of Chinese students are concentrated in the short and medium term, 36% plan to stay for 1-2 years, 26% plan to stay for 3-5 years, 7% plan to stay for more than 5 years, and 13% hope to stay permanently.

So we can see that Chinese and Indian students are pointing to different paths to study abroad.

Some people regard studying abroad as a stage of obtaining overseas qualifications, while others put studying abroad into work experience, long-term residence and even immigration planning.

Destination choices also confirm this difference. The most common destinations selected by Indian respondents are Canada (30%), Australia (13%), the United Kingdom (9%) and the United States (9%);

Chinese respondents were more likely to apply in the UK (16%), Australia (9%), Canada (8%) and the US (8%).

Of course, this set of data should also be understood in the context of the language test.

IELTS is more recognized in Commonwealth countries, so in China, many candidates are more inclined to apply for IELTS in Commonwealth countriesTOEFLApply for U.

Although IELTS Voices is only a survey of language test candidates, we can also see that,Destination selection, language examination selection and post-graduation planning are actually a connected path.

From which exam to choose, to which country to study in, to whether to stay or leave after graduation, every step of international students' choice is increasingly showing their own long-term plans.

This also means that when discussing the global group of international students today, it is difficult to summarize everyone with a unified portrait. Also studying abroad, students from different countries set out with completely different goals from the beginning.
